Motor Vehicle Excise Tax
Excise tax is calculated using the vehicle’s original manufacturer’s suggested retail price, also called the window sticker price or Monroney label price. The mill rate applied to that price drops each year the vehicle is registered, based on the vehicle’s age:
- 1st year: .024
- 2nd year: .0175
- 3rd year: .0135
- 4th year: .010
- 5th year: .0065
- 6th year and beyond (floor rate): .004
Registering a Vehicle
The documents you need depend on the type of registration:
- New registration: Bring the manufacturer’s certificate of origin or title, a bill of sale, and proof of current insurance specific to the vehicle being registered.
- Private-sale registration: Bring the title signed over by the seller, a bill of sale, and proof of insurance for the vehicle.
- Transfers between vehicles you own: Bring the registration for the vehicle being transferred from and proof of insurance for the new vehicle.
- Out-of-state vehicles moving to Maine: Bring the out-of-state title, a bill of sale if recently purchased, and proof of Maine insurance.
Proof of insurance must be current and must specifically name the vehicle being registered.
