Overview
The Town of China has adopted a number of ordinances, a Land Development Code, and a set of administrative policies that residents, property owners, and businesses are expected to follow. This page explains what these documents cover. The full library of current documents is available on the Documents page rather than listed here.
Land Development Code
The Land Development Code is organized into eleven chapters, plus supporting maps:
- Chapter 1: Authority and purpose
- Chapter 2: Land Use Ordinance
- Chapter 3: Subdivision Ordinance
- Chapter 4: Phosphorus control
- Chapter 5: Floodplain Management Ordinance
- Chapter 6: Wireless Telecommunications Facilities Siting Ordinance
- Chapter 7: Kennel Ordinance
- Chapter 8: Solar Energy Systems Ordinance
- Chapter 9: Appeals Ordinance
- Chapter 10: Enforcement
- Chapter 11: Definitions
The code also includes the Land Use Map and the Development District Map.
Standalone Ordinances
China has also adopted a number of standalone ordinances outside the Land Development Code. These cover topics such as parking in specific areas of town, cemetery operations, the Budget Committee, the Planning Board, the Recreation Committee, solid waste, vehicle weight limits on posted ways, quorum requirements, acceptance of streets and ways, and the Board of Assessment Review.
Town Policies
In addition to ordinances, the town publishes roughly two dozen administrative policies. These cover areas such as personnel, the administrative code of ethics, internal financial controls, meeting procedure, tax collection, emergency management, and use of municipal property.
Questions About Land Use
Residents with questions about an ordinance, a permit, or a land use issue should contact the Code Enforcement Officer at (207) 445-2014, option 5, or by email at ceo@chinamaine.org.
